Onsen (hot spring) travel in Japan

“ONSEN” is the Japanese word for hot spring.

 

In fact, ONSEN is not exactly the same as hot spring in English, it is a broader concept.
Onsen includes hot spring therapy, Japanese bathing culture, traditional Ryokan culture.
It linked to a relaxing luxury travel style, popular for customers of all ages in Japan.

 

What is Onsen travel?

 

Stay at traditional Onsen Ryokan (Japanese style pension)
Experience hot spring baths
Enjoy local Japanese Cuisine, typically traditional dinner and breakfast
Wear traditional Japanese Yukata (casual Kimono)

 

Where to go?

 

There are more than 3,000 Onsen facilities across Japan, you could say you will find them anywhere!

Most of the luxury Onsen Ryokan are located in volcanic National Parks, or other areas of scenic beauty, that are still relatively easy to access by public transport. Some Ryokan in remote areas have pick up/drop off service available.

 

Is that expensive, staying at a Onsen Ryokan??

 

The price is usually calculated per person (not per room), and inclusive of 1 traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast.
Depending on the degree of luxury of the Ryokan, and the available facilities, the average price starts from around 120 Euro per person per night.

 

Are private baths available in Onsen Ryokan?

 

Yes, there are 2 options.
private Onsen bath in room
public Onsen bath for private use


Is Onsen travel a children friendly travel style?

How about the price?

 

Yes and No.

 

Yes: Some Ryokan aim specifically at family travellers, they even have a pool and playing facilities for young children.

No: Not all luxury Ryokan are willing to welcome children, you could compare it to top class restaurants in Europe.

 

The Ryokan that welcome children normally have family room rates, and you need inform specific requests, like child meals, baby bed and so on. Above 12 years old will be fully charged as adult.
